Description
Located in the field to the north of White Meldon are a
fine collection of large modern clearance cairns, essentially great big
piles of equally large boulders cleared from the surrounding
hill side to facilitate agriculture. Large boulders can also be
seen along the edge of the road and stream.
Directions
From Peebles take the A72 Glasgow road. After 4 miles turn right
onto minor road for Eddleston. After approx. 4 miles stop in
parking area at entrance to Nether Stewarton forest. White
Meldon can be seen to the east and the cairns are quite visible
in the field to the north.
Parking
By road side at entrance to Nether Stewarton forest or in
parking areas along Meldon Burn.
Fieldnotes
The size and position of some of the larger boulders on these cairns,
particularly those on top, tends to suggest they were
constructed in modern times using mechanical plant. Okay, so
they are probably modern, but that does not detract from what is still an
interesting collection of ancient stones.
