Description
From Dead Wife's Grave to Dollar Law, following the boundary
fence, there are numerous piles of stones. Most are likely to be
the remains of boundary markers, for the estates in the Manor
valley and those around Dawyck and Stobo. The most interesting
is found along the edge of Hallmanor Forest at Lour Burn
Head/Heron Bog and comprises a row of three large stones, all
recumbent and of similar size, lying in the heather on the south
side of the stone wall.
Directions
From Manor valley to the south-west of Peebles. Enter Hallmanor
Forest at Hallmanor and follow the main trail. After a sharp
U-bend, turn right up the Old Drove Road. At Dead Wife's Grave,
follow the fence/wall south.
Parking
At entrance to Hallmanor Forest.
Fieldnotes
A point of interest is that these piles of stones have survived
at all. It is odd that they have not been totally robbed out to
build the dry stone wall running along the ridge line above
Hallmanor Forest. Perhaps the stones did have some meaningful
purpose in the past which has helped their preservation.
