Description
To the north of Midshiels farm, can be seen a standing stone
that reaches a height of over 2.10m and with a similar girth.
The stone is four sided, with right-angled corners and rises
with a slight taper to a chisel top. Approx 90m to the south
west the remains of a cairn can be seen.
Directions
From Hawick, take a minor road leading north east towards
Hassendean farm. The stone is in the field adjacent to the road
leading to Midshiels farm.
Parking
There is no easy parking in the vicinity. The best way to view
this stone is to park the car in Hawick and follow the old railway
line which runs at a raised level to the north of the stone.
Fieldnotes
This stone is very similar in size and shape to the standing
stone at 067 Warrior's Rest, both of which are associated with
burial cairns and have clear views of the rising sun to the
east. The Midshiels stone also has a very suggestive phallic
shape, perhaps indicating rebirth is an area used for burial.
The area is also cultivated and other cairns may have been lost
to the plough and field clearance.
