005 Standing Stone, Kirklandhill, Tyninghame.

Prev | Next

Description
This impressive standing stone can be seen from the main A1 Trunk road just after the junction for Tyninghame and is situated in a cultivated field (potatoes at the time of visit) and is one of the largest standing stones in the area, reaching around 3.40m.

Directions
From the A1 south of Dunbar head west and take the A198 for Tyninghame. The stone can be easily seen from the road junction.

Parking
For a closer look, request permission for access at Kirklandhill farm where parking may also be sought.

Fieldnotes
This is one of the tallest stones in East Lothian and can easily be seen from the A1 trunk road, in fact, you need not even get out of the car. To get a closer look, and I would recommend you do, I asked for permission to park at the farm and then walked between the rows of potatoes to the stone. Keep an eye on the soil as you walk along the rows, you never know what you might find. The stone may also be a summer and winter solstice marker with the peak of North Berwick Law to the west.
