Standing Stone, Lochend, Newbridge. |

Description
This massive standing stone sits by the busy A8 road in an
industrial estate. The stone is partly hidden by scrubs and
stands around 3.00m high. My first impression of this stone was
of sadness, that it now stands neglected and forgotten. Much of
its grandeur is lost by the surroundings. Has been referred to
as the Lochend Longstone.
Directions
Take the A8 from Edinburgh and turn in at Ratho Station, then
right and right again into the Industrial Estate. Make your way to
the north west corner. The stone is behind the building nearest
the road.
Parking
Car park at factory beside stone.
Fieldnotes
Its a shame that this magnificent standing stone has now been
almost swamped by urban development. Surrounded on three sides
by an industrial estate and the forth by the bust A8 feeder road
to the Edinburgh - Glasgow motorway. It is a miracle that it has
survived. Its an impressive stone despite the surrounding and
its not difficult to imagine it standing in an ancient
landscape, and just possibly, forming an important place in a
larger ritual complex of stones of which only the three standing
stones on Huly Hill, a few hundred metres to the west, still
survive.
